Dr. Levi Cheney was born February 10, 1825 in Freedom, Cattaraugus Co., New York, As a young man, he moved with his family to Kirtland, Lake Co., The family can be found on the 1840 Kirtland, Ohio Federal census. By early 1840 they had moved again to Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois as many Mormons did at that time. Many of the Cheney families were moving to the new settlement as well. Levi's father Ephraim Cheney had purchased land a short distance behind the Nauvoo House, Aaron Cheney Sr. his uncle lived on a block next door to theirs.

The Mormons were driven from the area, by 1846 his father Ephraim Cheney was living in Erin, Stephenson Co., Illinois, this is known from the obituary of Hariett Law (Cheney). Hariett's obituary states they had arrived to the Kent area that year. They can also be found on the 1850 Federal Census for the Erin, Illinois area several years later. Levi Cheney cannot be found on this census as well as several of his siblings. They would have been in Salt Lake, traveling there with the Mormons that were crossing the plains so heavily by this time (1848). Levi also mentions that he visited with his cousins at Council Bluffs and it is also known though their descendants that they were in the area in 1848. Levi and his siblings probably stayed in Salt Lake for a short period of time and left with the many that were going to California. It is known from his letters that he was in the Nevada City California area by 1849. His brother Lewis was running his freight company in the Sacramento area and is also known to have found a certain amount of gold. In the spring of 1850, Levi and at least his brother Mansel had found some gold as well, though it is not know how much this would have been.

In 1896 Dr. Levi Cheney and Amelia M. Clark and their two young daughters Samantha and Hattie, moved from Kent, Stephenson Co., Illinois to Independence Missouri. Below is the story told by Velma Thompson Bradshaw a granddaughter of Dr. Levi Cheney:

"To Kent Stephenson Co, Illinois-June 19, 1872. The whole family made this move. Levi then married and went to Des Moines, Lee County, Iowa, then back to Kent, Stephenson Co., Illinois to the farm, then to Viscennes, Stephenson Co., Illinois, then back to Kent again to care for his mother. Later, in 1896, he moved to Independence, Missouri. By this time , he had married Amelia Ann Clark, and Hattie Rosetta and Samantha Caroline were 14 to 17 years old. Levi came to Independence alone and rented a home. He then returned to Illinois and sold the farm. He went to the railroad station, and had a car set aside which would hold cattle. On one side, he had furniture and what they wished to bring along. On the other end, he had chickens, a cow, two or three sheep, a hog, his team, mother's horse, her little buggy, a work wagon, and their buggy with the fringe on top. He soon sold the work wagon, but I can remember the other buggies, and mother's little two wheeled buggy with a pretty umbrella on it."
Velma Thompson Bradshaw, many years ago

Many family members of Dr. Levi Cheney had left for Salt Lake City Utah bet. 1847-1851 shortly after the murder of Joseph Smith Jr, the prophet and founder of the Mormon Church. While many Mormons choose to follow Brigham Young after Joseph's death, a large group had stayed behind in Nauvoo and other towns in Illinois and Missouri. They choose the leadership of Joseph Smith III, the son of Joseph Smith Jr.. When Joseph Smith Jr. was murdered in Carthage, Illinois (1844), Joseph III was but a young boy.

Family history (many have heard this) tells us Dr. Levi Cheney would travel to Salt Lake during the late 1840s with his brother Mancil and possibly his brother Lewis Cheney. He would write of his trip to California and it is believed he went to Salt Lake on this trip as well. He did not agree with the policies of Brigham Young and is said to have left in the night with his horse's hooves wrapped in burlap for silence. His brother's are said to have left with him in the same manner.

His descendants stayed in the home and remain close friends and neighbors with the Smith and other families all of their lives. My grandfather and my great uncle would tell me of the fun they had while playing at the Smith home and swimming in the creek with their children. In 1992 the magazine Spectrum, interviewed my grandfather George Wallace Thompson I before he died in 1996. He gave his account of his experiences growing up on Short St. with the Smiths. Levi's daughter Samantha Cheney spent 70 years in the home. My great uncle has spent 84.

Dr. Levi Cheney and his wife Amelia M. Clark are buried just a few feet from the tomb of Joseph Smith III and his family plot at the Mound Grove Cemetery in Independence, Missouri. From what I understand Dr. Levi Cheney was the first person to be buried in the Mound Grove Cemetery. Many of their descendants are buried in family plots surrounding Levi's.

The following was written by my grandfather George Wallace Thompson, (grandson of Dr. Levi Cheney) to my older brother about 1970, concerning the history of Dr. Levi Cheney:

      "Dear Geo III
      Hi Good Buddie:
I received your letter and will help you all I can
My Grandfather, Your Great Great Grandfather was a pioneer Doctor who practiced in the latter part of the eighteen hundreds and up until 1901. In those days there were no drugstores or Pharmaceutical companies who mixed and prepared medicines, so the Doctors had to make their own medicine. They went in the woods and dug herbs and gathered different tree and bush bark which was used in their medicines. In those days most of the medicines and cures were learned from the Indians. He would make his calls in a wagon with a team of horses. If he had to make a long call, sometimes maybe 15 or 20 miles he would just saddle a horse and cut through fields to go the shortest way. If the person was real sick, he would just stay at their house, maybe two or three days or a week if necessary until the person was better and on the way to recovery. When he went on horseback he had a special saddle bag which fit over the horse to keep all his medicine and instruments in. Sometimes he would have to hide in the woods from quarrelsom Indians or Marauders, but most of the time the worst trouble he would have was bad weather-with rivers and streams out of their banks."

    • These are a few returned letters that Dr. Levi Cheney wrote to his cousin Olive Cheney McBride and her son Elam McBride (Salt Lake City, Utah) in the late 1800s. There is also one letter to Elam Cheney the brother of Olive McBride. Olive Cheney was the wife of James McBride** and daughter of Aaron Cheney (Mormon Pioneer) and Mehitable Wells. Her brothers also being Levi's cousins are referenced in the letters. ( Elam Cheney "Mormon Pioneer", Amasa Cheney , Ezekiel Cheney "Mormon Pioneer" and Aaron Cheney Jr. or Sr. "Mormon Pioneer".) Olive Cheney McBride would later mention receiving letters from Levi Cheney in her family record book. Her book mentions that Levi had sent a picture of his daughters, including Samantha Cheney Thompson my great grandmother. Olive Cheney McBride's family record book was then quoted in the book : "Elam Cheney , Aaron Cheney and Mehitabel Wells, Their Ancestors and Some Descendants " by Marvel R. Cheney, 1967. A letter to Dr. Levi Cheney's cousin Elam Cheney of Salt Lake City Utah. Elam is the son of Aaron Cheney.

      April 12th 1891

      Dear Cousin Elam ,

I received your letter a few days ago and was pleased to reply I am on the farm in Kent Ill and a bit ill of health. The weather is better, hope yours are doing fine. I have written to Olive McBride a number of times but I believe they do not always arrive. I have missed all of the family and often remember of the good times that we had in Nauvoo. I traveled to Nauvoo a wile ago, it is not the same place. It is not the same as the days that we spent on our fathers farms, desolate Nauvoo is today. I wish for you to write to me and give me the adresses of any of the following persons 1 Amasa Cheney 2 Aaron Cheney, 3. Harrison Burgess 4 Ezekiel Cheney, 5 Margaret Johnson, 6 Robert Johnson, 7 Nathaniel Levert, 8 Flavilla Levert or any of the name of Lindsay. I stayed a bit with Harrison when I was in Utah. Many in our party were friends of Harrison Burgess. As you know we left for Sacramento in 49 with good hope. California was a miserable place, raining for days on us. We lived mostly off of the land and what the lord gave us. We worked any area that we found and did not have a blessing until the spring of 50. I and Mansel worked a claim outside of the Nevada City and found our profit for our trip. I and Mancil said that we would not have come to Californis before those good days. We stayed in Council Bluffs and Wyoming for almost two years. As I told you in my last letter Mansel was killed wile with Lewis at the Powder River by Indians a few numbers back. His wife has married again , his son Franklin married a woman named Alice, Mansels daughter Mary has some children and is the wife of McCullock. Much of Lewiss family lives near Boulder , like I said before he is dead to. Mathew, Chester and Wesley live near Sac City, Sac County, Iowa, I lived for some time in Iowa myself but would rather stay on the Kent farm. I have hurd that Clark has gone into Poligamy and has several wives. I am troubled to hear of several foalks that have taken wives. You know they just believe what they have been taught. Please give them my adres in Kent, I would like to haer from them if you can know were they are living. I will part now and send my love to the family.

In answer to yours of a late date I would say that I was glad to hear from you again and to hear that you were alive and wel and I was also glad to hear from your familey as I had not hurd from them since I went to California while(?) was at Green River I found a man that told me all about your father's familey. He was from Utah. But he did not know anything about Robert or Margaret for they had not got there yet they were then at Council Bluffs. I saw them there. She married a man by the name of Noah T. Guyman and he had married two or three other wives and I don't know how many more he had after that for I never hurd of them afterwards until you said you saw them out there. I would like to write to them if I could get their adress. I have written to them but got no answer yet hope I wil soon. I often get letters from Melinda Higley. I was sorry to hear that Clark went into polygama but I suppose he got it preached to him and he beleaved it. I wish you would send me as large a peace of the stone that the Salt Lake Temple is built of as you can send for the two cent stamps that you will find enclosed and oblige me by so doing.I want the rock to get cut in to a watch charm for a curosity and I would like to have it as near square as you can conveniantly get it and if the two cent stamps are not anuf I will send the balance when it comes. Wal(?) Olive I wil hafto close for it is chore time. We send you our love from your cousin. Levi Cheney

P.S.-- If I said that the woman that I saw at Farmington was the wife or daughter of the McBride that got killed with the corn cutter I did not mean to so state for I dont know what connection she did say she was only that she knew James. I have broken my typewritter and now hafto quit. L.C.

      Dear Cousin Olive McBride,
I received your welcom letter and the peace of rock and was glad to hear from you and as much obliged to you for your trouble but you did not send any bill with the rock so I do not know what your charges are but the postage I do know what it was and you wil please to find it in this note. The weather is clear and cool, there is some snow on the ground but it wil soon go off I think. I have written to Elam and have got an answer. He was well at the time of writing. I hope this will find you well as it leaves us. Our love to you and yours Levi Cheney
